5 HTP – Hydroxytryptophan

A derivative of the amino acid tryptophan.

The molecules in 5 HTP are so small they can enter the brain and are then converted into serotonin - Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that influences mood, sleep and appetite.

5 HTP elevates mood, relieves migraines and promotes sleep.

The body produces its own supply of 5 HTP from tryptophan, which is an amino acid found in high protein foods such as fish, chicken, beef and dairy products.

Deficiency of this could cause:

    Normal Dosage

    50-100mg up to 3x daily for depression. 100mg 3x daily for migraine and insomnia.

    Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Drowsiness
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Doses over 100mg-nausea and nightmares

    Low doses of 20-50mg should ensure these are minimal.

    Contra Indications

  • Do not take on an empty stomach.
  • Do not use for longer than 3 months at a time.
  • If you are taking anti-depressants, or other prescription medication, check with your doctor before taking 5 HTP.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant.
